Short answer: yes. Many children who cannot sit still for long at first gradually manage longer as they start enjoying the game. The key is to start without pressure, let them play real games with other children, and use a trial class to see how they get on before committing.
Why many easily bored children like chess
- It is a game: children play, not just listen.
- Every game has a clear result, so they see the effect of their decisions straight away.
- Playing classmates is more fun than playing an adult or playing alone.
- There is always a next goal, such as a first tournament or watching their rating go up.
How to start without boredom
- Try one unit first. At Fat Cat you can pay per unit (450, 600 or 750 THB depending on the unit) and use that amount as a discount on the full course.
- Watch interest, not stillness. A child who fidgets but keeps looking at the board is doing fine.
- Praise effort, not only wins, especially in the early weeks when they lose often.
- Keep home practice short: a few games a day beats one long session.
Group or private lessons for a restless child?
Group classes at the academy last 90 minutes and children play several classmates, which keeps many of them engaged for the whole class. Private lessons are booked by the hour and the coach can adjust the pace to the child, which suits children not yet ready for a group. See group or private chess lessons.
Good to know
Chess helps children practise focusing on something they enjoy, but it is not a treatment. If attention difficulties affect your child’s schooling or daily life, talk to a doctor or their teachers as well.
Fat Cat Chess Academy teaches children from age 5 in Khlong San, opposite The Platform Wongwian Yai, and is open every day 9:00–19:00. Classes are taught mainly in Thai, and our coaches can help in English when needed. Ask us about your child on LINE @fatcatacademy.
