Group or Private Chess Lessons for Kids in Bangkok: Which Is Better?

Short answer: most children do best in group classes at the academy, because they play real opponents, learn to win and lose, and pay less per hour. Private 1-to-1 lessons suit families who live far away, need flexible times, or want the coach to focus on particular areas. At Fat Cat Chess Academy in Khlong San, Bangkok, you can do either, or combine them.

Why group classes work well

  • Children play many different opponents, so they meet new kinds of positions more often than against one coach.
  • They practise winning, losing, waiting their turn and tournament manners in a safe setting.
  • The course follows clear steps, so parents can see where their child is.
  • The cost per hour is lower than private lessons.

Why private lessons work well

  • You choose the day and time with the coach.
  • No travel if you learn online, or the coach can come to your home.
  • The coach can focus on the student’s weak points, for example openings or preparing for an important tournament.
  • Adults who want to learn at their own pace often prefer it.

How to choose

  • New to chess and can travel to Wongwian Yai: start with the Beginner I group class.
  • Live far from Khlong San: take private online lessons, then come to the academy for tournaments.
  • Already in a group class but stuck on something: add a few private lessons on that topic.

Classes are taught mainly in Thai, and our coaches can help in English when needed. See all prices in our guide to chess lesson prices in Bangkok, or ask on LINE @fatcatacademy.

Frequently asked questions

Which helps a child improve faster, group or private lessons?

It depends on the child. Private lessons give full attention, while group classes give experience against many different players. Many children improve quickly with group classes plus regular tournaments.

Can private students play in the academy’s tournaments?

Yes. Private students can play in Intramural and Caturayuth after taking Units K and L of Beginner I, which prepare students for tournaments (900 THB). Tournament entry fees are separate from class fees.

Can group class content be adjusted for my child?

No. Group classes follow the set curriculum for each unit. If you want to focus on something specific, private lessons are the better choice.

Can we try a class first?

Yes. You can pay per unit first (450, 600 or 750 THB depending on the unit) and use that amount as a discount when you sign up for the full course.
